Exhibition open: Friday 4th October to (TS) Friday 1st November (RH) Friday 8th November
Private Viewing last night of Tony Smith’s ‘Pillar and Post’ alongside Richard Hooper’s ‘Against the Odds’ at The Cornerstone Gallery Liverpool Hope University.
Smiths body of work, which relates to a particular iconic Liverpool Music venue from the late 70’s, contains dynamic mark making and evidences a history of visual investigations and innovations. Vivid use of colour compositions create lively visions with repetitive marks evoking a nostalgic narrative. Alongside this is evidence of destabilizing mediums with thinners and gestural marks utilizing impasto techniques which combine to create fascinating and alluring paintings.
Hooper’s sculptures, with their striking colours, clean lines and simplistic forms effortlessly conceal the vast process-led learning curves attained to achieve them . These graceful objects represent not only a practical expertise in advanced design technology but are evidence of an enquiring exploration into potentially viable strategies in the making of contemporary formalistic sculptures.
